Flower Care

At Bloomex NZ, we love flowers as much as you do — and we want to help you enjoy them for as long as possible. Whether you’ve just received a beautiful flower delivery or you’re sending flowers to brighten someone’s day, here are our best care tips to keep those blooms looking their absolute best.

Roses

Our long-stem roses come straight from the lush farms of Ecuador and Colombia — some of the best in the world.

When your roses arrive, they might look a little sleepy. Don’t worry! They just need a good drink. Here’s how to help them perk up and bloom beautifully over the next few days:

  1. Gently remove the outer “guard” petals - they’ve protected your roses during travel.
  2. Trim about 2–3 cm from each stem and take off any leaves or thorns that will sit below the water line.
  3. Fill a clean vase with cold water and add one packet of flower food.
  4. On Day 4, re-cut the stems, refresh the water, and use the second flower food packet.
  5. Keep your roses away from heat and direct sunlight - they’ll thank you with longer-lasting blooms.

Sweetheart Roses

These smaller roses come from our New Zealand growers and are every bit as special.

  1. Let them drink for about 8 hours once they arrive.
  2. Remove the outer petals just like with long-stem roses.
  3. Trim 2–3 cm off the stems and remove any leaves below the water line.
  4. Add flower food to fresh water in a vase, and repeat the trimming, water change, and second packet on Day 4.
  5. Keep them in a cool, shaded spot for the longest life.

Peruvian Lilies

(also known as - Alstroemeria)

These cheerful, long-lasting blooms come from both local greenhouses and South American farms.

They might arrive looking a little wilted — that’s normal. Just give them a long drink:

  1. Trim about 3 cm from the stems and remove any leaves below the water line.
  2. Fill your vase with water, add flower food, and let them hydrate for 8 hours.
  3. On Day 4, repeat the process with a fresh cut and fresh water.
  4. Keep your lilies away from bright sunlight and warm spots.

Sunflowers

Big, bold, and beautiful — sunflowers have naturally arched necks, so they shine best in a tall vase that supports their stems.

  1. Cut 3 cm off each stem and remove leaves below the water.
  2. Add flower food to fresh water in your vase.
  3. On Day 4, give them a fresh cut and new water with your second flower food packet.
  4. Keep them away from heat and drafts, and remove any wilting leaves to keep your bouquet looking vibrant.
  5. Remove spent leaves to keep bouquet looking fresh longer.

Tulips

Tulips are little sun-chasers — even in a vase, they’ll keep growing and curving toward the light.

  1. Trim 2 cm off the stems and remove leaves that would sit in the water.
  2. Add flower food to fresh water in a vase.
  3. On Day 2, give them a fresh trim and new water with your second packet.
  4. Store them somewhere cool and shaded for the best results.

Iris

These elegant blooms are sensitive to their environment but so rewarding with just a little care.

  1. Cut 3 cm off the stems and place them in fresh water with flower food.
  2. On Day 3, repeat the trimming and water change.
  3. Keep them away from direct sun, heat, and cold drafts.

Lilies

When your lilies arrive, they might be closed — but just give them a little time and care, and they’ll open up beautifully.

  1. Let them drink for about 8 hours.
  2. Trim 3 cm off the stems and remove lower leaves.
  3. On Day 3, refresh the water, re-cut the stems, and use the second packet.
  4. Lilies prefer cool spots out of direct sun and heat.

Gerbera Daisies

These bright, happy blooms come with a little extra care — but it’s well worth it.

  1. Remove the plastic cups, but leave the straw on each stem for longer life.
  2. Let them soak up water for 8–12 hours.
  3. Trim 3 cm off the stems, fill your vase with water, and add flower food.
  4. On Day 3, change the water, re-cut the stems, and use the second packet.
  5. Gerberas are sensitive to dirty water, which can cause droopy necks — if that happens, give them a fresh cut and clean vase.
  6. Keep them in a cool spot away from the sun.
