Flower Care
At Bloomex NZ, we love flowers as much as you do — and we want to help you enjoy them for as long as possible. Whether you’ve just received a beautiful flower delivery or you’re sending flowers to brighten someone’s day, here are our best care tips to keep those blooms looking their absolute best.
Roses
Our long-stem roses come straight from the lush farms of Ecuador and Colombia — some of the best in the world.
When your roses arrive, they might look a little sleepy. Don’t worry! They just need a good drink. Here’s how to help them perk up and bloom beautifully over the next few days:
- Gently remove the outer “guard” petals - they’ve protected your roses during travel.
- Trim about 2–3 cm from each stem and take off any leaves or thorns that will sit below the water line.
- Fill a clean vase with cold water and add one packet of flower food.
- On Day 4, re-cut the stems, refresh the water, and use the second flower food packet.
- Keep your roses away from heat and direct sunlight - they’ll thank you with longer-lasting blooms.
Sweetheart Roses
These smaller roses come from our New Zealand growers and are every bit as special.
- Let them drink for about 8 hours once they arrive.
- Remove the outer petals just like with long-stem roses.
- Trim 2–3 cm off the stems and remove any leaves below the water line.
- Add flower food to fresh water in a vase, and repeat the trimming, water change, and second packet on Day 4.
- Keep them in a cool, shaded spot for the longest life.
Peruvian Lilies
(also known as - Alstroemeria)
These cheerful, long-lasting blooms come from both local greenhouses and South American farms.
They might arrive looking a little wilted — that’s normal. Just give them a long drink:
- Trim about 3 cm from the stems and remove any leaves below the water line.
- Fill your vase with water, add flower food, and let them hydrate for 8 hours.
- On Day 4, repeat the process with a fresh cut and fresh water.
- Keep your lilies away from bright sunlight and warm spots.
Sunflowers
Big, bold, and beautiful — sunflowers have naturally arched necks, so they shine best in a tall vase that supports their stems.
- Cut 3 cm off each stem and remove leaves below the water.
- Add flower food to fresh water in your vase.
- On Day 4, give them a fresh cut and new water with your second flower food packet.
- Keep them away from heat and drafts, and remove any wilting leaves to keep your bouquet looking vibrant.
- Remove spent leaves to keep bouquet looking fresh longer.
Tulips
Tulips are little sun-chasers — even in a vase, they’ll keep growing and curving toward the light.
- Trim 2 cm off the stems and remove leaves that would sit in the water.
- Add flower food to fresh water in a vase.
- On Day 2, give them a fresh trim and new water with your second packet.
- Store them somewhere cool and shaded for the best results.
Iris
These elegant blooms are sensitive to their environment but so rewarding with just a little care.
- Cut 3 cm off the stems and place them in fresh water with flower food.
- On Day 3, repeat the trimming and water change.
- Keep them away from direct sun, heat, and cold drafts.
Lilies
When your lilies arrive, they might be closed — but just give them a little time and care, and they’ll open up beautifully.
- Let them drink for about 8 hours.
- Trim 3 cm off the stems and remove lower leaves.
- On Day 3, refresh the water, re-cut the stems, and use the second packet.
- Lilies prefer cool spots out of direct sun and heat.
Gerbera Daisies
These bright, happy blooms come with a little extra care — but it’s well worth it.
- Remove the plastic cups, but leave the straw on each stem for longer life.
- Let them soak up water for 8–12 hours.
- Trim 3 cm off the stems, fill your vase with water, and add flower food.
- On Day 3, change the water, re-cut the stems, and use the second packet.
- Gerberas are sensitive to dirty water, which can cause droopy necks — if that happens, give them a fresh cut and clean vase.
- Keep them in a cool spot away from the sun.
